Springfield - Art and Mill Race Year Round Walk
5 km. (3.1 miles) or 10 km. (6.2 miles), both rated easy.
This walk begins on sidewalks in downtown Springfield leading past 15 excellent murals and 8 humorous storm drain paintings (see especially the Oregon Trail Mural on Main Street between 5th and 6th Streets). The walk then goes on the new, paved Mill Race Path along the former mill race just south of downtown. This path is partly in the open, partly in forest, and goes by two active lumber mills. Water should be carried on this section, as the restrooms/water fountains at the trailhead had to be shut down due to vandalism. The walk will become a Year Round Event in 2019.
Registration for the walk is at 8 a.m. at the Courtsports Athletic Club, 2728 Pheasant Blvd. just off of Harlow Road in the Gateway area of Springfield. If needed, carpools will form there to drive the 2-3 mile distance to the start point (no carpool fee). The walk should finish by 11 a.m., at which time some of the walkers may decide to have lunch together at a Springfield restaurant (purely optional, of course).
