11 km. (6.8 miles), rated moderately easy on a natural path.
This Rails-to-Trails route follows a former railroad line through a rimrock canyon from Madras to Lake Simtustis. At the lake, a bus will shuttle walkers back to the start point. For those who can spend the weekend in Central Oregon, it is matched with a Volkswalk the following day (Sunday) at Smith Rocks State Park near Terrebonne.
The Mossbacks will not be carpooling to this event. Those people interested in ride-sharing should call our president, Sally Ross, at 541-726-7169. Registration for the walk is at the City Public Works parking lot, 216 NW B Street in Madras, from 9 to 11 a.m.
Directions to the Public Works lot, and further details of this walk, can be found by clicking on the "Other Oregon Events" bar at the top left of this page and scrolling down to 5/5. Alternately, the same information on this and thousands of other Volkswalks and Volksbikes throughout the United States can be obtained by clicking on the "National Events" bar on this page, then "Events" and following the prompts. The National Events page also has links to Volkswalks in Canada and over 40 other countries.
